Free Fax ProgramsThe free fax software on this page allow you to send, and possibly also receive, fascimiles from your computer through a fax modem or one of those all-in-one machines that can fax, print and scan.
Note that many, if not most, Linux distributions already come with fax software, so you may not need to download any additional software (unless you want to get the latest version).

Free Facsimile Software for Fax ModemsWindows XP Built-in Fax Wizard: How to Fax a Document in Windows XP (Windows) Windows XP (and probably also Vista) comes with built-in drivers for sending and receiving faxes. The software even allows you to configure the fax cover page. The link given above provides information on how you can do it.
Stupid Fax (Windows) This Windows program is able to automatically print (if you want) and save incoming faxes as well as to log incoming calls with date/time and status. You can also print old faxes that you have received previously as well. Other features include automatic file conversion, the ability to execute a system command (program) when a fax is received, the ability to make it answer the phone only after a certain number of rings, the facility to view a fax on-screen, etc. As far as I can tell, this program is designed to be a fax receiving software.
Efax (Linux, FreeBSD, Apple Darwin) This fax software sends and receives faxes using any Class 1, 2 and 2.0 fax modem. It is small, lightweight and comes with a command line interface that allows you to send, receive, view and print faxes. It also includes a program to convert your fax between various file formats. There are also a variety of third party programs that provide a graphical user interface (GUI) to this program (linked from their site) so that you can do it conveniently from a windowed program. This is an open source program.
HylaFAX Server (Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD) Unlike some of the other programs listed here, this software operates on a server-client principle. The HylaFAX server itself is the program that interacts with the fax modem, formats your document in a form suitable for faxing, and sends and receives the fax. To send or receive fax, you will need a client program (many of which are listed on their site). The latter provides the user interface for you to choose your documents, set the cover page (etc). This architecture allows you to set up a machine with a single facsimile machine that can be used by other computers on the network. The server is open source and works on Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD.
Impact ColorFax Lite (Windows) Features in this Windows program include preview of your faxes, faxing using 33.6K (V.34), colour and black and white faxing directly from your desktop, sorting of faxes, phone book, auto-printing of incoming faxes, auto-forwarding of incoming faxes to a particular fax number, auto-modem detection, support for up to four modems, etc. It is compatible with Class 1, Class 2 and Class 2.0 faxmodems. This program requires Windows Vista, XP or 2000 (either 64 bit and 32 bit). Note that the software does not allow you to create/edit your own cover page.
